Solitude in the winter is a magical wonderland, and there’s so much to explore and experience whether you like to ski, ride, dine, or relax – or all of the above!
Get an early start — or milk the last turns
Here at Solitude, we just can’t wait to hit the slopes! New for the 21/22 season, Solitude will open an hour early on weekends and holidays during the winter. Once spring begins mid-March, the whole mountain will be open 9-5, seven days a week. There’s no need to be a VIP to access these extended lift hours! Anyone with a valid pass or lift ticket for the day is already in. Why limit the fun? At Solitude, get up (and stay up) with the sun. View more details about our extended lift hours.
Ski Honeycomb Canyon
Ask an advanced skier or snowboarder about Solitude, and “Honeycomb Canyon” may be among the first words out of their mouth. With gladed hillsides and unrivaled hike-to chutes, Honeycomb Canyon is an adventurous skier’s snowy playground paradise. Even Woodlawn, the black diamond run that courses the bottom of the canyon, features countless side lanes and a few challenging pitches to keep every run interesting. Honeycomb Canyon is accessed via gates near the top of Summit Express, Powderhorn II, and Eagle Express chairlifts. It often requires avalanche mitigation work following fresh snowfall, so be sure to obey all rope lines and posted signs for your safety.
Snag at snack at Little Dollie Waffles
Solitude’s newest eatery is located slopeside at Moonbeam Center and couldn’t be more convenient – or delicious! For breakfast, brunch, lunch, or apres, it’s tough to beat a piping hot Liege-style waffle with your choice of toppings. Pair your snack with hot cocoa for a boost to keep you skiing all the way to last chair.
Ride the first detachable quad chairlift in Utah
Grab a seat on a piece of history! Eagle Express chairlift was the vanguard of a tidal change in Utah’s ski industry when it opened in 1989. Still going strong, Eagle Express moves 2,800 people per hour at full capacity, delivering skiers and riders to some of Solitude’s blue and black runs – among them, impeccable groomers and heart-racing bumps – as well as the double-black wilds of Navarone when Eagle Gate into Honeycomb Canyon is open.
Rip a groomer
And not just any groomer! Challenger, accessed by Eagle Express and Honeycomb Return chairlifts, is the steepest groomed run in Utah. Slaloming down its rolling lines is best enjoyed on a crisp bluebird day. If you love the corduroy, you know that Solitude boasts one of the best grooming crews in the Wasatch, offering up smooth sailing on seamless slopes (any time we get a reprieve from our equally famous 500” average annual snowfall, that is!). Head for Eagle Express on a groomer morning to ski Challenger early and often.
Curry up at Roundhouse
What could be better than a delicious curry with naan to warm your belly on a cold winter day? Nothing against burgers and chili, but Roundhouse’s Himalayan-inspired menu heats up your ski day and appeases your hunger like no other place in the Wasatch. Located mid-mountain near the bottom of Powderhorn II chairlift, with plenty of outdoor seating on its generous wraparound deck, it is perfectly situated to give you top-to-bottom views of Solitude’s front side and breathtaking vistas of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Take a locals’ tip and order the curry fries – betcha can’t eat just one!
Try cross-country skiing
The Solitude Nordic Center is a favorite among the local cross-country crowd, who love its 20km of groomed trails, beginner-friendly flat track, and tree-lined byways. We recommend taking a lesson in classic or skate-style skiing to get off on the right foot. Ikon Pass holders enjoy half-day pricing on all full-day trail passes and equipment rentals.
